These commonly present with a sudden onset of knee pain.  The knee swells up quite considerably and the pain is too severe to continue with the sporting activity.  A diagnosis of the type of injury can be made based on both the history of what took place during the injury and a clinical examination.  An MRI scan is useful to diagnose soft tissue injuries, such as cartilage tears or cruciate ligament ruptures.
