Total hip replacement

Total hip replacement surgery involves removing the arthritic ball and socket joint and replacing it with a prosthetic ball and socket. 60,000 hip replacements are performed in the UK each year; it is a very successful operation giving patients excellent pain relief and function.

There are many different types of hip replacement implants; differing in the way they are fixed to the skeleton ( Cemented and Cementless) and the type of articulation material used for the ball and socket, which may be metal on plastic, metal on metal or ceramic on ceramic. Mr Carrington will discuss implant options in the clinic.

Hip replacement surgery takes approximately 90 minutes depending on the complexity of the surgery. Patients rehabilitate in hospital for 5 days following surgery, before returning home. Crutches are used for the first 6 weeks after the operation
